Achilles served initially in the Home Fleet and was then transferred to the New Zealand Division in 1936. In November 1939 she formed part of Force G operating between the Falklands and the Plate estuary. During the Battle of the River Plate she received light damage then returned to New Zealand waters, where she carried out trade protection patrols. When Japan entered the war, Achilles escorted troop convoys off Australia and New Zealand, and then, in February 1942, joined the ANZAC squadron in the south-west Pacific theatre. She operated in this theatre until early 1943, when, as part of TF67, she took part in an operation off New Georgia, together with US units, during which she was hit by a bomb on 5 January, which struck X turret. The ship returned to Portsmouth for repairs which lasted from 1 April 1943 to 20 May 1944. She recommissioncd on 23 May and went out to the Indian Ocean to join the Eastern Fleet, then in May 1945 joined TF57 in the Pacific. With the British Pacific Fleet she took part in the raid on Sakashima Gunto, the carrier raids on Truk, and in the final attacks on the Japanese mainland in July and August 1945. Achilles returned to Britain on 12 September 1946 and paid off on 17 September, reverting to RN control after ten years in the RNZN. She was subsequently sold to India and commissioned as INS Dehli on 5 July 1947.
