Built by Swan Hunter, Wallsend. Laid Down 30 December 1936.

Launched 31 March 1938. Completed 6 July 1939.

Scuttled 2 May 1942 after being disabled by German submarine and destroyer torpedo attacks, Barents Sea (57 lost). Follow this link for the story of her loss.

Edinburgh formed part of the 18th Cruiser Squadron at Scapa Flow in September 1939, but on 1 October she was transferred to the 2nd Cruiser Squadron in the Humber. She escorted convoys to Scandinavia until March 1940, then refitted until 28 October 1940, after which she rejoined the 18th Cruiser Squadron with the Home Fleet. In March 1941 she covered the Lofoten raid, and in May participated in the hunt for Bismarck, intercepting the blockade runner Lech. In July 1941 she went to the Mediterranean for Operation Substance, and again in September for Halberd. By November she was back in northern waters, escorting Russian convoys. On 30 April 1942, while part of the cover for QP11, she was torpedoed by U456. Although hit twice and critically damaged, she was able to get steam up again and proceed slowly, but on 2 May she was attacked by German destroyers. She managed to sink Z26 before being hit by a torpedo from one of the destroyers, which caused her to lose all power and flood. She was sunk by the destroyer Foresight.
