Built by Harland & Wolf, Belfast. Laid Down 10 December 1936.

Launched 17 March 1938. Completed 3 August 1939.

Mined 21/11/39 - Devonport for repair 7/40 - 12/42

Reserve 1952-1956. Refitted including replacement of light AA with 6 dual 40 mm, 1956-1959. Paid off 1971.

Belfast joined the 18th Cruiser Squadron with the Home Fleet, but on 21 November 1939 she detonated a mine laid in the Firth of Forth by U21, which broke her back and caused extensive damage. After temporary repairs at Rosyth she was moved to Plymouth for full repairs, which were not finished until 8 December 1942. She rejoined the Home Fleet on Arctic convoy duties and took part in the Battle of North Cape on 26 December 1943, when Scharnhorst was sunk. In April 1944 she refitted for duty as Headquarters ship for the Eastern Task Force during the Normandy landings, where she remained until July. In August 1944 Belfast began a major refit in preparation for joining the Pacific war, and this was not completed until May 1945. She sailed to the Pacific theatre, arriving in Sydney in August 1945, and remained in the Far East and saw action in the Korean war until 1952, when she came home to reserve. After this period in reserve she was taken in hand for refit in 1955, which was completed on 12 May 1959. Thereafter she served in the Far East again until 1962, then served as Flagship of the Home flotillas. She finally paid off in February 1963, and is now a museum ship on the Thames in London.
